The Hunger Games Franchise: Where Are We Headed? Part 1-Box Office

With less than a month to go before we jump back into the craziness that is filming and all the first pictures that will come along with it, I think its a great time to reflect on what has happened and look to the future of what could be.

Less than 6 months ago we were introduced to the on screen manifestations of Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark, Gale Hawthorne, and yes… the legend Haymitch Abernathy. And we were not disappointed. And even though the success of The Hunger Games was super high before the movie’s release, the spike in interest and and buzz since the movie has been unparalleled.

We cannot even imagine a life without The Hunger Games anymore. It has dominated our lives from the moment we opened to page 1. And the best part? We have 3 more movies to go. The truth is: It is only the beginning.

And knowing that I am brought to this question: How big will this Franchise get?

@xforeverdeen says, “Well, I think that the franchise as the potential to be up there along with other big names like Harry Potter, and Twilight in terms of success, but I don’t think that the franchise could branch out and make a theme park, or anything like that. “

When asked if they think there is a limit to the success of The Hunger Games franchise, @InnocentTribute says, “Highly doubtful. So far, everything has gone completely perfect. I think it can only get bigger. “

In answering this question, I think its best to look at the success of the other book to movie franchises in which the Hunger Games is always compared, and well, compare them.

Doing this is far more deep than just a surface comparrison when we are talking about success, and success comes from more than just one area. So I will be breaking this down into a series. The first part of the series, success at the box office.

Box office success:

Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone:

The Hunger Games:

Twilight:

Now its interesting to point out that Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone made two-thirds of its box office total overseas. While The Hunger Games made two-thirds of its box office total IN the US. This can be used to point out that box office wise, The Hunger Games is more popular in The US than Harry Potter was at their first movies. This tells me that the biggest area of growth for The Hunger Games potentially is in places outside the US.

Twilights box office totals were near split 50/50 with a little leaning towards international.

Coming up on Part 2 of the box office, we will look in depth into the numbers, patterns, and what we should expect from Catching Fire’s box office totals.
